Town development in Heroes VII

$
0
0
Towns are the heart of a hero’s kingdom. They are shaped to serve his ambitions and his needs.

Each faction has its own town structure. Many buildings are common to all factions, but some are specific. Also, as all factions have different approach of architecture, culture and urbanism, therefore towns have a different structure depending on their faction.

For instance, Academy towns have access to Magic Guilds earlier, and can develop specific buildings to improve their Magic Guilds.

Haven towns have fast access to the strongest possible walls. Stronghold towns offer dwellings before more elaborate buildings.

Prices also differ according to each faction, especially since the most elaborate buildings require rare resources, which create different needs in resources for each faction. For instance, Sylvan towns require more starsilver than most, when Stronghold rley a lot on wood.

DEPENDENCIES & TOWN LEVEL

The development chart of a town is similar to that of Heroes V, since it adds a global “town level” requirement for building new content in addition to classic resource needs and building dependencies. For instance, to build a level 2 Magic Guild, you may not only need a level 1 Magic Guild and the necessary resources, but also to lift your town to global level 12, unlocking new buildings.
CHOICES THAT MATTER

Many times when developing a town, the player needs to make choices between two possible buildings. Those choices are important. Maybe you’ll need to focus on growing more troops, maybe you’ll need to mine more resources.

Make the right choice at the right time. If you pass on one type of building, you may build it in your next town, or maybe you’ll find one during your conquests!
BUILD YOUR OWN STRATEGY

Developing your towns is crucial in Heroes VII. Through the choices you make, the priorities of building order, you can support your overall strategy, as well as your heroes. Those choices impact troops quantity and quality, your town’s defense, your economy’s performance, your spell knowledge, and many buildings also support your hero in battle.

CAPITALS

A classic rule of Heroes games is that each player can only upgrade one of his towns to capital, making it the biggest of his kingdom and that with the largest income. This is also true in Heroes VII.

NO CONVERSION

Towns in heroes VII cannot be converted to other factions. If they don’t fit with your faction, you’ll have to manage the benefits of owning an additional town and deal with the complications of multi-faction play, which, we believe, is an interesting part of the game.

Other features make possible and interesting, under certain conditions, to play multiple factions at the same time in Heroes VII. It’s sometimes a necessity to fully exploit the wealth and power of a map… but that’s another story to be told!

Councilors,

Two factions are willing to share their experience with this council. Two factions that may have more to offer than anyone think. Only one can join us and the choice is yours councilors. Who do you think should tell us their story? For the moment, you seem to favor the Dark Elves of Ygg-Chall over the Demons of Sheogh.

Will Inferno defenders give up without a fight? They must have something interesting to contribute to Ivan's Council as well! If you think their story is more interesting to be told, defend your faction right now

Tell us in the comments your best arguments and we'll showcase some of our favorites and the one with the highest number of votes in a dedicated article next week!

The Lord of Griffin: Duke Ivan

Well met, my fellow Shadow Councillors.

It is time for you to learn more about Duke Ivan and his inner circle. As they say in the Greyhound Duchy: “à tout seigneur, tout honneur.” So let’s begin with the one we want to see on the imperial throne, the Lord of Griffin himself.

You shall know that Ivan was the second son of Duke Vassily of Griffin with his lady wife, Ilona, one of Duke Ekhard of Wolf’s daughters. Ivan’s older brother, Fedor, was destined to become the next Duke, while Ivan went to the seminar of Flammschrein, and then to Falcon’s Reach itself, to learn the ways of Elrath. But soon after Ivan’s thirteenth birthday, tragedy struck: both Vassily and Fedor were killed while hunting a bloodfrenzied Wyvern on the eastern borders. Devastated with grief, Ilona retired to an abbey to live the rest of her days shunned from the cruelty of the outside world.

Deprived of this luxury, Ivan had to become the new ruler of the Griffin Duchy. But he always kept a nagging suspicion that foul play had been involved in his father and brother’s deaths, and he kept looking for the truth – which is how I was eventually made his personal Spy Master, after many years of dutiful service to the Griffin dynasty. But that’s another story.

Ivan’s new title meant he had to study the art of the sword and both political and military strategy in Falcon’s Reach. These courses proved more to his liking than theological studies. He became good friends with the soon-to-become-Empress Maeve Falcon, and knew the first sparks of romance with Duke Seamus of Stag’s teenage daughter, Nolwenn – although these innocent escapades were soon obscured by the heavy responsibilities that now befell him as Duke. It is only years later that Ivan met Nolwenn again and could resume his gallant courtship of the Stag lady, although as you already know, a much darker misfortune would once again “eclipse” their relationship, if you’d be so kind as to forgive this rather tasteless pun. Not that this wooing would have necessarily led to a deeper commitment: Ivan refused all plans to marry. In fact, the Lord of Griffin has gained quite the reputation as a ladies’ man, and if he has a weakness, his love for women is it.

In any case, even back in the guiltless days of his youth Ivan had much on his plate: dealing with the family tragedy, walking the long and sinuous path of rule, and working hard to understand the true meaning of being a Duke. As it turned out, he was a natural born leader, and the peoples of Griffin, who had also loved the rather stern father Vassily, doubled their affection and hopes for the son. In Ivan’s first fifteen years of reign, he increased the influence of the Duchy of Griffin with bold and open commercial policies towards the neighbouring realms of the Elves, Orcs and Dwarves, as well as the Free Cities of Hammer Fall, Stormcliff and Listmoor. The Duchy of Griffin had grown wealthier and more powerful than at nearly any time in its history.

When the civil wars of Falcon succession broke out, many saw Ivan as the most intelligent solution to succeed Maeve of Falcon. He was amiable, a proven administrator of state, and possessed a piercing charisma. Though every Duchy could lay a blood claim, and the line of Stag had historically been considered the heir apparent, the choice of Ivan as the successor started gaining momentum, until war broke out. It quickly became ostensible that there would be no peaceful solution and that only the most powerful military leader would rule the bitter remnants of the Holy Falcon Empire. We are gathered in this Shadow Council to ensure this leader is Ivan.

On the 1st day of the White Maiden, Stefan of Wolf entered the war, sending his armies north to counter the Bull’s advance. Far in the north, Seamus of Stag had spent the last months cutting down the forests on Irollan’s border, gathering wood for purposes unknown. His plans were as inscrutable as ever, but it seemed obvious he too would soon join the fray…

Tales of the Ten Years War

847 YSD – Dead of Winter

The eastern front

Stefan’s bold and fearless tactics, which had been described as “foolhardy” by some, proved the Bull’s demise. In the first two months of the year 847, no less than seven battles were fought in the wheat fields near Vladikraj and the Cherna hills. The Wolf lost two of them.

Before spring, it was clear the Bull had lost its chance to conquer the Griffin Duchy. Amílcar retreated to Voron Peak, but the Wolf drove him out of the city in a matter of weeks. Defeated, Amílcar ran back to his Duchy, with tail between legs.

But while the people of the Griffin Duchy were ready to hail Stefan as their saviour, they soon realized that the Wolf lord had not actually been defending the Griffin lands from the Bull. No, he simply intended to conquer them for himself.

The western front

In the West, Ivan’s cavalry and Griffin riders kept harassing Enguerrand’s vanguard and support lines, buying enough time for Rowena’s forces to regroup with Ivan’s reinforcements. Tatyana’s sacrifice had not been in vain. Rather than entrenching themselves in Kilburn and risking a war of attrition that would have played in Enguerrand’s favour, Ivan and Rowena decided to intercept the advancing Greyhound’s forces in the open.

The two armies met on the 13 th day of the Night Veil, not far from the small city of Ashwood. The battle lasted 3 days. The losses were heavy on both side, but the allied forces eventually took the upper hand, if only by a narrow margin. Ivan and Rowena decided to push their advantage, forcing Enguerrand to withdraw back behind his own borders.

Enguerrand’s forces having been defeated north and south, the Unicorn Duchy was victorious. Ivan suggested the time had come to cease hostilities by offering peace. But Rowena ignored Ivan’s recommendations, deciding to enter the Greyhound Duchy with her armies instead. Preoccupied by the news he had received regarding the situation in his homeland, Ivan gathered his own troops and began his long journey back east.

The Ice Demons

Temperatures started to drop uncharacteristically throughout the month of the Shining Star. Scholars and weather wizards were all in agreement: winter was not going to be soft this time around. The winter of 847 was in fact the worst Thallan had known in decades, so harsh that even the intrepid Stefan of Wolf was forced to halt his invasion plans.

With incessant snowstorms sweeping across the countryside, trying to venture in the mountainous area where the Griffin’s capital of Eastalon was located would have been suicide. Even Whitemane, in the valley below, had become too risky a target. The Wolf armies instead retreated to Voron Peak, located in a slightly more hospitable region, waiting for the weather to improve. But it was only getting worse, and they waited a long time. Too long.

By early Spider Queen, strange rumours began to reach Stefan’s ears. The few travelers that dared venture in the frozen wasteland the Griffin lands had turned into brought back stories of a monstrous army of “Ice Demons”, descending from the eastern mountains. The stories differed greatly when it came to describing the creatures, but they were all agreeing on one point: they were marching west, towards Voron Peak.

The Wolf lord refused to give credit to these tall tales, believing them to be mere propaganda intended to scare him away from the Griffin Duchy. Five years after the Fourth Eclipse, no Demons could remain on Ashan in such numbers. As for Ivan’s armies, they were still far in the west. Finally, one thing was certain: no Human army was mad enough to travel in such harrowing weather.

He was absolutely right. He had simply forgotten an important fact: not all of Ivan’s subjects were Humans.

On the 22nd Day of the Spider Queen, the “Ice Demons” were at Stefan’s door. Led by Kente, Ivan’s Master-of-Arms, the Orcs of the Whitespear tribe soon taught the Wolf lord the meaning of fear…

Hello Heroes,

Since October 1 st, the war rages on over the decision of the next faction to join the Council of Ivan.
Many of you took the time to join us for this important decision and we would like to thank you again for your passion and dedication!

Today, some of you contacted us with great material to defend their favorite faction and it is our pleasure to share them to all of you.

Don’t forget that you are still able to make the change (and yes we mean it knowing the vote counts) so do not hesitate to share the love for your faction and invite people you trust on this council.

Please take note that Ubisoft or the Might & Magic team is not responsible for the content of the following documents and of all potential spoilers/incoherencies. However, those are really great content so we recommend you to have a look ;)

FAN ARTS

Let’s start this overview with an amazing drawing from LiDu-Dono! Passionate Heroes of Might and Magic player, with a great touch of creativity & talent, he sent us his vision of the Shadow Dragon for the Dungeon faction. With a lot of research based on previous instalments and designs, he managed to offer his vision of this creature that he loves so much. We were just impressed, don’t know what to add!

Fan Art

Inferno supporters also have a lot to share and are ready to defend the Demons of Sheogh!
A few years ago, Sombo33 created this great fan art of the dangerous Pit Lord and he wanted us to repost it today to defend the glory of this faction with style! “Give 'em Hell, horny boys! :D” (Sombo33).

Fan Art

Meet the Incubus, new Inferno creature wasd1200 would like to see implemented in the game. This elite caster unit, using destructive fire and earth spells with ranged attacks would float over the battlefield thanks to his powerful wings.

Fan Art

It seems that some of you have also difficulties to make their choice or wish to support both factions such as DimaJeydar who share this great fan art from both Heroes 5 & Heroes 6 arts!

FANFICS

Do you wish to discover the story of a group of survivors from Eruina's kingdom, Inshanost? Led by an assassin called Tanar,  this fanfic from CanWakhan stand up for the Dungeon faction

Raelag852014, a very active member of our Shadow Council sent us several fanfics over the past weeks. The first one depicted a story between Jezebeth & Ivan that you may find really interesting. Moreover, it seems that this faction vote also was a great source of inspiration for him (and Inudaughter) because he contacted us again with no less than 15 chapters for the following “In the World of Prisoners” fanfic! Check this out!

Inferno won’t lack from fanfics as well thanks to Lokdron We are pleased to share with you his creation: “Unending Hatred”!

Last but not least, for all councilors that masters the earth language of Spanish, a document that may not be directly related to this vote but that definitively caught our attention! Indeed, Sigbert1983 (who recommend you to vote for Dungeon!), created this year a  fanmade Role Play game scenario (Pen & Paper) based on Ashan universe for the legendary Dungeon & Dragons 3.5 game! We were blazed by the quality of the document and all the work that must have been necessary to produce it, a big congrats!!!

FANVIDEOS

At the beginning of this vote, we received in the comments 3 videos from Athaca_Greezly, supporter of the Dungeon Faction and amazing cosplayer of several key characters of the Ashan universe you might recognize! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGl7Skt4dEE

The team from cheapmovies is back for the battle between Dungeon & Inferno! We are pleased to introduce to you the second season of the fan series “The Campaign”!

Important notice: this content might not be suitable for everybody and would be recommended for people over 16 years old (and non-suitable for work ;))

You are still able to share your best creations so do not hesitate to reach us following the instructions on the  dedicated article!

Meet the Team: Shadow Council Actors - Part 1

In this time of great choices and important announcements, let us begin putting under the spotlight the Shadow actors behind the Shadow Council. We will present you the different actors behind the development of M&M Heroes VII and this website. In time, you will be able to learn more about different protagonists, the men and women who are working on this awesome project.

To begin with, we are pleased to introduce ourselves, we are the Community Developers Arnaud (Ubi-Nox) and Gaëtan (Kimmundi) in charge of the content of this website!

Do not hesitate to ask any questions about us and our passion in the comment section, we will focus on the questions related to the topic of this article only!

Meet the Team: Arnaud & Gaëtan

Gaëtan (left) & Arnaud (right), Community Developers

1. Who are you and what is your role in the Heroes VII team?

Arnaud (Ubi-Nox): Hello everybody, my name is Arnaud and I’m working as Community Developer for the Might & Magic Franchise. It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to share with you my passion for this project and today with my own name!

Joining the M&M team was like a dream to me and it all started in April 2013. After finishing my International Business studies, I applied to an intern position at Ubisoft as Community Developer Assistant. I had no clue at that time about the project related to the offer and the surprise was huge when I discovered this amazing opportunity to join M&M team. At the end of my internship, I had the chance to return as Community Developer on the brand and expand the field of my responsibilities.

Along with Gaëtan, our objective is to create meaningful content for the fans and maintain excitation until and after the release of the game. For example, we are in charge of the Shadow Council website and are working with the teams to provide quality content on a regular basis in respect with the Production progress and Marketing constraints. Of course we do not write all articles (the Lore ones for example) but our job is to ensure that all the requirements are reached to contribute to this website in the best conditions (content roadmap management, assets creation, proofread etc.)

However this is not all, we are also in direct contact with communities to help them receive relevant information (Q&A, interviews etc.) but also supporting them for event organization (fandays, goodies etc.). As we are integrated within the core team of the project, we are also representing the community expectations in all major discussions and are fighting to deal with project constraints and our shared hopes.

Gaëtan (Kimmundi): I am Gaëtan, aka Kimmundi on the forums and websites and I’m a community developer for MM Heroes VII and a Community Manager for MM: DoC. I’ve begun working for Might & Magic: Duel of Champions in June 2013 as a Community Manager, and as Arnaud needed help, I joined the Heroes VII team in September 2014 (I’m the “new guy” in the team). It was a great honor as I would be able to join on a project that passionate me and for which my experience on another M&M game could prove valuable!

2. Could you describe the process of your work? What is the best part of your job?

Arnaud (Ubi-Nox): The great thing about this job is that there is no “average day” because you always have something different to achieve. Sometimes you can spend the entire day to organize events such as Fandays or hours to edit pictures and videos for the website. Updating official channels is generally done on a daily basis (or at least we are trying to :)) but this website is definitively our main task at the moment. The whole process from the idea of an article to the publication is not always without pitfalls.

Moreover, a good part of our duty is dedicated to discussions with teams (and VIPs) in order to find solutions all together to implement features, be able to create articles about specific topics etc. It is sometimes difficult to share information about Work In Progress content but we will continue to fight hard to deliver the maximum for this website. :)
The best part of this position would be that you never have the opportunity to get bored and you always have something new and exciting to discover: Twitch sessions, implementation of Role Play tones articles, setting up of meaningful vote possibilities etc.

Gaëtan (Kimmundi): The best part of the job would be the community feedback: reading the comments, the forums, exchanging with the community and planning new content according to all of that!
There’s no usual day. But usually, I try to spend some time reading the comments, social channels, forums… to get a wide view of what the community is talking about at the moment. Then there’s the planning stuff: make sure the article are written and approved, prepare their publication on the website and the coverage on our social channels. And then, there’s the rest: meetings with the team to discuss the next steps and incoming articles, prepare interviews, request information, staying informed (on the development and on other stuff as well, we need to stay uptodate on a lot of subjects).

3. What are you the most proud of?

Arnaud (Ubi-Nox): If you are following this website on a regular basis, you may have already a good overview of our work. However, I must admit that even if I’m really pleased by what we achieved until now, I’m looking forward to the following months of this communication roadmap that I’m sure will be even more exciting! Haven line-up full reveal was a great momentum for all of us and I’m glad many of you joined us for our Twitch, we hope that we will be able to do even better next time as soon as we have a new demo to show you all!

On another topic, being a M&M fan for years, there is something really kind to my heart about the true orientation of the team towards communities and it is always a pleasure for me to exchange with our fan sites representatives or VIPs.

Gaëtan (Kimmundi): Well-written articles and their comments. It’s a pure joy to be able to share one’s work with the world and get feedbacks, good or bad, on it. It’s often based on information gathered with the team, but putting it in form and adding my own touch is always something I’ve liked to do.

4. Are you a Might & Magic fan? Tell us more about your history with the franchise.

Arnaud (Ubi-Nox): My love story with Might & Magic started in 1999. Like many of you I’ve started with Heroes 3 of Might & Magic and still continue to play it on several occasions. Since, I played all the following opuses but also took the time to benchmark a lot Heroes 1 & 2 (I must admit that number 2 is also a massive reference for the genre in my opinion).

For years I have been playing Heroes 3 with friends on hot seat mode and from times to times we continue our games sessions. I’m not really a campaign guy so what really matters for me is gameplay and balancing (+factions) but rest assured, we have also some people here really invested in all story topics!

If I had to pick only one Heroes it would be (not very original answer incoming) the number 3 :)
It all started here for me and it also represents today what most fans call the “true heroes experience”. With what I can see about Heroes 7 development, I might admit that I am truly confident because even if the team improves the formula with great features, they managed to respect those solid roots.

I had to pick only one faction, it would be of course Necropolis and the Dread Knights from Heroes 3 as favorite creature :) Or maybe a new creature from Heroes 7 that might blow you mind, but it is not for now…

My favorite part of Heroes VII is the map editor, but I’m not the best one to tackle the subject and I don’t want to spoil everything; so stay tuned in the following months, we are preparing also some great interviews of the people in charge of this tool ;) (yeah I’m sorry, the last two paragraphs are only teasing you but I guarantee it will worth the wait!)

Gaëtan (Kimmundi): I’ve played Dark Messiah, Heroes V & VI mostly (a bit of the third as well), Clash of Heroes (on mobile, it’s really fun) and Might & Magic: Duel of Champions. I’ve really become a M&M fan with Dark Messiah when I documented myself about all the lore behind the franchise, and working for quite some time on Duel of Champions made me even more of a fan.

Favorite game would be Duel of Champions, but mostly because I worked so much on it I love it. In terms of Lore and Flavor, I’m a Haven guy, with a strong feeling for Sanctuary (my heart can’t choose, and I find some decisions/past actions of the Holy Empire… debatable). Academy also holds a special place for me, I love their theme. Favorite creatures would be the Academy constructs, can’t name one in particular but I love the Titans and their story, this kind of revival of Shantiri technology. Duel of Champions has a lot of them.

Favorite part of H7? The Shadow Council without hesitation! I love this deep lore, this feeling of conspiracy and secrecy… it still has a lot of reveal and contribute to the game…

5. What are currently Reading, playing, watching?

Arnaud (Ubi-Nox): I hope I won’t repeat myself since my interview from Might & Magic X – Legacy but I’m still not a reading person. The only books I achieve to read in the previous years were Role Play books or Campaigns for a Pathfinder adventure I’m currently handling with friends as Game Master.

Concerning Video Games, my favorite genres are Strategy games and RPGs. If I had to pick only one game in all history it would be  Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, a RPG that did not receive the success it deserves and with no legitimate heir at the moment (you should definitely try it! At the moment, I’m preparing myself for the next Civilization installment (tomorrow!) and play Borderlands the Pre-Sequel with some friends (as Claptrap, obviously). To finish on the gaming topic, here a small list of my references: Civilization (+Civnet for good old time memories), Age of Empires II, Warcraft III, Heroes III & more!

I also like Japanese animation but I’m a bit picky on this topic so my favorite’s ones are maybe not up to date :) If you want discover some great examples (maybe not for all audience): Neon Genesis Evangelion, Elfen Lied & Berzek. In addition to this, I really appreciate the music of this genre but also Metal & Rock classics.

Gaëtan (Kimmundi): I’m currently reading Flood by Steven Baxter. Playing, well depends at what moment and with whom, but I’m mostly on Fantasy Life and Super Smash Bros on 3DS, Alien Isolation and The Evil Within on PC and Mario Kart 8. I just started watching Archer and I’ll soon have finished it as I really love it, and otherwise I follow the “mainstream” TV shows (The Walking Dead, Gotham, Arrow, South Park, The Big Bang Theory). I’m definitively more a tv show than a film guy, it takes less time!

6. A Message to the fans? A Moto to share?

Arnaud (Ubi-Nox): Thank you all for your support on this platform, it is really exciting to see your passion since the announcement of the game. Managing this platform and all articles is a lot of work so we hope you find this content interesting and that you are looking forward what is coming next (we are too)!

My motto: “Never surrender, with glory we fall!” (Hammerfall - Heeding The Call)

Gaëtan (Kimmundi): Do a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life. Always see life on the good side and never fear change. In every aspect of life, change is scary but can bring great things. I think it can also apply to Heroes VII ;)

Feel free to add questions if you have something interesting to share!

Dungeon vs Inferno: last week to vote

$

Two factions, almost unknown on the face of Ashan. The Infernal demons of Sheogh, spawns of Urgash, for long the enemy of the people of Ashan. The cave-dwelling Dark Elves, followers of the Faceless, adorers of Malassa, historic foes of their forlorn brothers, the Sylvan Elves.

Ivan must however find allies everywhere to achieve his goals. You must help him make a choice. He would surely follow your advice, and we have not yet reached the end of our debates.

You have one week left to vote and choose councilors. We know that a lot of you haven’t casted their votes yet, or may be inclined to switch sides. In the secrecy, we are already looking at the ballots and everything can still change… Advocates can be found anywhere, don’t hesitate to invite people you trust to this council and convince them to vote.

We are nearing the end of our census! Cast your votes, convince your fellow councilors to change their minds (by any means you deem necessary) and we will meet up once again in a week time to announce the results of this vote. Both factions have something to bring to Heroes VII adventure, but only one can join…

The Guardian Angel: Murazel

Welcome, my friends.

Today I will tell you more about one of Ivan’s advisors. While for reasons of my own I chose not to immediately disclose her identity during the first sessions of this Shadow Council, many among you have correctly guessed the name of the Angel sitting at Ivan’s table. She is indeed Murazel, the Guardian Angel of Hammer Fall.

Murazel has lived for millennia – she fought in the Elder Wars alongside the likes of Archangels Michael and Sandalphon, and has acted as witness and judge of many battles and events. Always serious, even dire, talking as is everything in life was of the utmost importance, she is obsessed by the truth and accuracy of the events she relates. Known among her kind for her impartiality and her friendliness to lesser races, she blames her people for the disappearance of the Shantiris, a “collateral damage” of the war against the Faceless. After the Twilight Covenant sealed a truce between the children of Light and Darkness in blood and magic, Murazel was one of the first Angels to leave the sky-born cities of her brethren to go live among the Humans. Still passionate about the Shantiris and their lost civilization, Murazel soon moved to the city of Hammer Fall, which had been erected over ancient Shantiri ruins, far in the East.

Many times, Murazel had to make sure the Shantiris’ powerful secrets did not fall into irresponsible and greedy hands. She always tried not to disturb the balance of power and intervened only as a judge and advisor. That is, until she broke her vow of neutrality and stood up to the armies of Kyla Falcon. Following this incident, Murazel became officially unwelcome not only in the Empire, but also among Angels.

When she was invited by Archangel Sandalphon to join the Conclave of the New Dawn, she knew her reputation of uncompromising honesty would serve to appease the suspicion of the Humans, still wary of Angels since Uriel’s Deception. For the same reasons, not all the members of the Conclave received her arrival warmly. And her sudden disappearance after Sandalphon’s assassination made her look even more suspicious to some.

Engulfed again in a world of lies, treachery and murder, Murazel quickly found herself deeply engaged in the protection of the weak and the restoration of the Holy Empire, as long as it didn't repeat the mistakes of the past. To achieve that, she needs a worthy man to rule it, and she has selected Ivan as the best-suited candidate. Murazel still has many friends and allies among both Humans and Angels, and has been working to convince the reformist factions within the Church of Light to side with Ivan against Seamus of Stag.

Map control in Heroes VII

$
0
0
Map control is a concept supported by many features in Heroes 7.

The goal of this mechanic is to provide options and means for the players to plan and execute a high level strategy to take over a map.

These means are often double-edged: they have a price and therefore, imply a risk. By spotting your opponents efforts to use map control features, you can decide to counter them, but that also has a cost.

Bridge

CHOKE POINTS

They are strategic locations of a map, which means that they are very useful roads or passages linking towns and high value areas like resource sites and outposts. Choke points are destructible structures like bridges or teleporters. Destroying is easy and fast. Rebuilding is costly.

By destroying a choke point, you force the opponents to spend resources to rebuild, which is a painful cost. At the same time, you are closing those passages for yourself, too, so it better be part of a greater plan, otherwise you may need to spend those resources yourself to reopen the ways you have closed.

Destroying and rebuilding will also stall you for the rest of the turn, which makes destroyed choke points interesting in defense of your towns.

Area

AREA OF CONTROL

Areas of controls are a bit different than in the previous game. The principle is the same. Towns and forts have an area of control around them. The player who owns the main building of an area of controls gains the benefit of resource sites inside this area.

Also, any wandering hero passing through an enemy area of control and not strong enough to attack its controlling building (town or fort) can raid a mine and steal a few days’ worth of resources.

Forts

FORTS

They are critical in the high level strategy. Forts in Heroes VII create areas of control like in the previous game, but they can be upgraded to provide permanent defensive troops and structures, making them harder to overcome.

Again, Players might want to invest or not in the upgrade of a fort. A stronger fort has its own troops and can have defense towers, which will forbid any secondary hero with a weak army to simply snatch a whole area of control and its mines.

In the other hand, a strong army will burn the fort to the ground and all investment will be lost. In Heroes VII, forts cannot be captured and converted; they are destroyed, and can then be rebuilt.

While a fort is in ruins, all mines in its area of control are free to be captured by any wandering hero.

OUTPOSTS

They are places remote from your towns, that are in strategic positions and that you might want to control, like areas containing resource sites. Generally, they are areas controlled by forts. Forts are very useful on a frontline, because you can send troops from your towns and dwellings there using caravans, to support a hero who has to reinforce fast and cannot afford to travel back to a town.

For this reasons, forts are not only useful to control local mines but also as a key location in reinforcement strategies.

Caravans

CARAVANS AND REINFORCEMENT LINES

In Heroes VII, you cannot recruit troops from all your kingdom in any town and fort: you need to move them where you want them. This is critical in the high level strategy of a game.
Caravans are simple to use, just select where you want troops when you are buying them, and they will be automatically sent there in a caravan.

Creatures bought in the same area of control are assembled in the controlling building before starting they travel. Once on the road, they are autonomous, but can be interacted with. Their owner can pick-up or exchange troops with them, before they reach their destination (another town or fort) and enemies can attack them. They are then considered as enemy armies without a hero.

This is why other map control features are important: you need to secure your reinforcement lines to avoid enemies to raid your caravans and deprive you of fresh troops on the frontline.

HE WHO CONTROLS THE MAP CONTROLS THE WORLD

To conclude, in Heroes VII, having a clearly established map control strategy will be key to victory. Counter-strategies are also available to disrupt enemies. Unprotected forts and supply lines can be raided to punish heroes who don’t invest in securing their grip on conquered territories.

Might & Magic® Heroes VII Shadow Council - Spymaster's PortraitThe deliberations are now over. The result was pretty close this time around.

But the majority has spoken: I shall tell Ivan a story of the mysterious Dark Elves of Ygg-Chall. I think I know just the one he needs to hear.

For once, I must say I am… pleased by the result. Indeed, it will be much easier for me to tell a story of my own people.

Yes, I can now reveal I am indeed a child of Darkness, a Faceless. My true name is impossible to pronounce, but in the Human realms, I am known as Jorgen. Or more accurately… we are Jorgen, and Jorgen is one of us.

I don’t expect you to fully understand the meaning of that statement. In any case, I took the habit of referring to myself as one single being, as it makes things simpler around members of the other races. As Jorgen, I have been serving the Griffin dynasty for many centuries.

Not all of Ivan’s advisors are aware of my true nature though. I chose not to hide it from Murazel, as she would have seen through my disguise eventually anyway. The Angel took it better than I expected, although she does not completely trust my intentions – understandably. Anastasya and I are old acquaintances, and she knows first-hand that my commitment to the Griffin family is not a deception. And of course, Ivan knows.

Now you do too.

But who are we, this Shadow Council, if not faceless beings, stirring things from the shadows? I am Jorgen, and I am one of you.

Vote for the Dungeon Line-Up!

Welcome back councillors,

You have chosen to hear the stories of the Dark Elves, the Dungeon faction! Even if the followers of Malassa won't be direct allies of Ivan in the fights to come, they have a story to tell, some experiences to share that will help Ivan in his endeavour to retake the throne.

Now let's get to the part you are all waiting for! Our game designers offered us 3 line-ups for the Dungeon faction. Each of them is balanced and offer different strategies for the Dungeon Armies. As for the Sylvan Line-up, one is more focused on offense, another on defence and the last one is a mix.

However, the vote will function differently from the previous one. We will have a first vote with the three line-ups, during which you are voting for your favorite. This first vote will last one week. At the end of this vote, the line-up with the less votes will be removed and we'll start a new vote with the two remaining choices, once again during one week. At the end of those two weeks of census, we'll have decided on the Dungeon faction line-up!

Remember that you can switch your vote at any time, so don't hesitate to convince your fellow councillors to join your cause!

The names of the creatures presented in this list are still Work in Progress and can change before the release!

More information about those line-ups (including assets from other games or concepts that may not represent Heroes 7 version of those creatures) to come in the following days.

The Blade from the Shadows

This army is fit to apply Dungeon’s preferred strategy, a risky hit-and-run. The speed of Skirmishers, Nightmares and Faceless provide unrivalled initiative and attack speed, supported by ranged debuffs from the Lurkers. Assassins finish off wounded enemies with lethal backstabs. The range and power of the Black Dragons is enough to remove all remaining resistance before the relative weak defense of the troops becomes a problem.

Core creatures

Assassin/Shade: melee walker with backstab ability. Damage dealer.

Shadow Lurker/Shadow Watcher: ranged attack flier with debuff abilities. Saboteur.

Skirmisher/Darkblade: melee walker with strike and return ability and no retaliation. Damage dealer.

Elite creatures

Minotaur/Minotaur Guard: melee walker with preemptive strike and no retaliation. Damage dealer.

Shadow Unicorn/Nightmare: teleporter with debuff aura. Saboteur.

Faceless/Faceless Assassin: teleporter with strike and return ability. Damage dealer.

Champion creatures

Shadow Dragon/Black Dragon: flier with area of damage and debuff abilities. Saboteur.

Cave Hydra/Dark Hydra:
walker with no flanks and life drain ability. Tank.

Malassa's Thousand Faces

A balanced army that allows both the classic hit-and-run tactics of Dungeon while ensuring a possible long-term battle. Troglodytes and Striders bring their toughness to support their allies, while Stalkers and Medusas bring ranged fire power to the lineup. Black dragons can be replaced by Hydras for a bulkier frontline.

Core creatures

Assassin/Shade: melee walker with backstab ability. Damage dealer.

Troglodyte/Chthonian: Earth spirit, immune to blind and with burrowing movement ability. Tank.

Stalker/Tracker: walker with ranged attack and piercing shot ability. Damage dealer.

Elite creatures

Minotaur/Minotaur Guard: melee walker with preemptive strike and no retaliation. Damage dealer.

Strider/Soulless: walker, shadowsteel construct with debuff abilities. Saboteur.

Champion creatures

Shadow Dragon/Black Dragon: flier with area of damage and debuff abilities. Saboteur.

Cave Hydra/Dark Hydra:

The Shield of Darkness

A defensive lineup with everything for Dungeon to rival usually tougher factions. Tanks and ranged attackers allow to take on enemies without using especially risky tactics. Troglodytes, Striders and Manticores are tough enough to go hands-on against anyone, while Stalkers and Lurkers provide ranged support. Hydras and Minotaurs provide additional muscle to the pack.

Core creatures

Shadow Lurker/Shadow Watcher: ranged attack flier with debuff abilities. Saboteur.

KasparWell met, my friends.

Yes, I’m sorry to say I still bear this rather ghoulish appearance. My attempts to fix my face with regenerative magic have been unsuccessful. I think it is Void magic unleashed during that ill-fated experiment that scarred my face, and it somehow negates all other forms of magic for the time being.

But enough about me. Since you’ve asked the Spy Master to tell Ivan a story about the Dark Elves and their Faceless allies, I’d better tell you a few things about the creatures that go bump in the dark.

1. Assassin

The Dark Elf Assassin is like the shadow of Malassa. Moving between shadows, Assasins have mastered the art of plunging a blade between their target’s shoulders.

Usually wearing black clothes, the Assassin's favourite weapons are a pair of sharp and serrated daggers. Some of them also have a fondness for poisons: their daggers are imbued with a mysterious kind of spiritual toxin that slowly erodes their victim's life force.

2. Shadow Lurker

The Shadow Lurker is a minor Spirit of Darkness in the shape of a floating orb of shadows with a single central purple and glowing eye and several eyestalks framing its body like tentacles, each ending in a smaller eye.

It is said these beings are born in Malassa’s dark wings, before detaching themselves to roam in the subterranean realms. Those unfortunate to cross their gaze see their worst nightmares reflected in the Lurker's unblinking eyes.

3. Skirmisher

Skirmishers are the dark reflections of the Sylvan Blade Dancers, who have developed their own form of Battle Dance, using a spear rather than twin blades. So well trained are they that they can charge and evade in the same strike, preventing their foes from reacting and retaliating before they are gone.

4. Troglodyte

Troglodytes are minor spirits of the Earth that were bound to the material plane millennia ago, and have been striving in the deepest bowels of Ashan’s underground world ever since. They are relentless diggers and burrowers, carving new caves and tunnels as if following some unknown design. Blind and possessing only basic intelligence, they can however become aggressive and dangerous when disturbed.

The Dark Elves have soon realized the usefulness of these creatures to expand their subterranean empire, and have been using magic to force Troglodytes to do their bidding.

5. Stalker

The Stalker is the typical Dark Elf whose words are soft as silk with a slight perfume of poison. Stalkers are fearless and fearsome, not known for long speeches but for expeditious action. Underground, the battlefield is too confined for the traditional Elven bows, so the Dark Elves have invented new weapons, specially designed for tunnel combat.

In the early decades of the War under the Mountains, Stalkers were known to bring chakrams to battle, but they now prefer using crossbows. After all, the Dark Elves have had plenty of painful opportunities to witness their deadly efficiency in the hands of the Dwarves.

6. Minotaur

Like the Harpies and Centaurs, the Minotaurs are Beastmen, created by the Wizards of the Seven Cities in the year 340 YSD. Half-human and half-bull, the Minotaur was meant to be the shock infantry to fight alongside the Centaur cavalry. A few centuries later, the Crimson Wizards of Al-Rubit, in a diplomatic gesture that surprised many and angered their neighbours in the Silver Cities, made a gift of one thousand loyal Minotaurs to the Dark Elves.

In a short period of time, the Minotaurs took oaths of loyalty to the Dark Elves and Malassa. Most Dark Elves appreciate the Minotaurs’ strength and reliability and consider them valuable allies. But a few clans, notably the Soulscars, tend to see them as little more than slaves.

7. Nightmare

Nightmares are unicorns that have changed over time due to their contact with Malassa. Their coat has become black like onyx, their muzzles skeletal and tortured, and their clear eyes deep black. Their horn, once a symbol of fertility, is the receptacle and the physical embodiment of the nightmares which these creatures are cursed to see and feel.

The thundering gallop of a Nightmare generates waves of horror that spread and propagate terror among enemy ranks. The horn of a Nightmare, when retrieved after combat, is a precious artefact. Crafted, shaped, and transformed, equipped with a hilt or shaft, it can become a sword or lance that carries and transmits the same nightmares that the beast itself collects.

8. Faceless

The Faceless are the children of Malassa. Masters of infiltration, spying, and stealth, the Faceless are the most mysterious and unknown of all the followers of the Dragon Gods. What little can be said of them is that they are clothed in shadow and mystery; if they are perceived at all it is a fleeting image from the corner of the eye, an odd moment of déjà vu, a strange sense that one is being watched...

The Faceless move in the shadows: they enter one shadow and leave from another. The Faceless don't need to speak, they can communicate by telepathy, from mind to mind. They are poorly trusted by their allies and greatly feared by their enemies.

9. Strider

While they are better practitioners of the Arcane Art, the Faceless do not possess the physical might and battle prowess of their archenemies, the Angels. To even the odds, and because ruse and deception are not always a viable option, the Faceless have created the Striders. These “living armours”, made of Shadowsteel (or, some would say, grown from the very blood of the Faceless), are not dissimilar, in principle, to Wizards’ constructs like Golems or Gargoyles.

Striders are possessed by the essence of a Faceless puppeteer, who controls it from the shadows. While capable of standing their own in a fight, their main role is actually to disrupt and negate the enemy’s magic. Not many people have encountered Striders and lived to tell the tale – therefore, I am unable to give you a reliable description of what the creature actually looks like! Most stories describe them as tall and gaunt, with long arms and legs, giving the Striders an almost insectile appearance. I’ll leave the rest to your imagination…

10. Medusa

The Dragon Gods have many faces, not all of them nice. Naga Priestesses who succumb to the madness of the depths are exiled from the Lotus Empire, and become known as Medusae. Most Medusae worship the Wrecker, the destructive aspect of the Dragon Goddess of Water, but some of them also turn to Malassa. After all, what lies in the deepest abysses of the ocean if not Darkness?

During their quest to find a way to bring back the Faceless Library from Sheogh and make it the centre of their new realm, the Dark Elves encountered a faction of renegade Nagas, led by Daimyo Oshiro the Accursed. These Nagas, involved in a failed coup against the Eternal Empress, had been literally forced to go underground. After being conquered, Oshiro’s people became part of the Dark Elf kingdom.

11. Manticore

The Manticore is a Magical Beast created during the Mythic Age. At that time, the surface of Ashan was irrigated by Dragon Veins. Beasts that drank these untamed rivers of Dragonblood were permanently altered by their powerful magic.

The Manticore seems to blend together the features of various animals: lion, bat, and scorpion, and is notorious for its venomous stinger.

12. Shadow Dragon

The Shadow Dragon is the avatar of Malassa, the Dragon Goddess of Darkness. They take the form of a dragon of onyx, with purple orbs embedded on their wings – these are the eyes of Malassa, capable of seeing any kind of shadows, literally or metaphorically. The Shadow Lurkers are said to be born from these glowing orbs.

The ultimate evolution of a Shadow Dragon is the legendary Black Dragon. On their wings, the eyes of Malassa are replaced by intricate patterns of light constantly dissolving, like galaxies being swallowed by the endless darkness of space.

13. Cave Hydra

Hydras are among the most formidable Magical Beasts to roam the lands of Ashan. These giant snakes, mutated by the raw magic unleashed during the Mythic Age, possess multiple heads, allowing them to attack several opponents at once. Their bite is nasty and, depending on the Dragon whose spilled blood was involved in the Hydra’s creation, it will have varying effects on the unfortunate victim.

There are as many types of Hydras as there are Dragon Gods. Some of them are purely serpentine, others have reptilian legs, and the exact number of heads varies from one species to the next. The Dark Elves have learned to tame the Cave Hydras dwelling in the bottomless Abyss.

Dear Councillors,

We come to you today in this serious time to update you about the results of the present vote concerning the Dungeon Line-up decision.

It comes to our attention that some members of this council wanted to influence in the shadows the results of this vote by voting with several accounts created in this goal.

However the whole community suffered today from this new turn of events and current results are no longer representative of the will of the majority of the council.

Therefore, please note that the results of the vote displayed on this website do not reflect the final decision and that the official results will only be published tomorrow (Friday 07/11) after the counting of the votes.

We would like to remind you that our objective is to give you ALL equally the opportunity to have an impact in the game. We are always delighted to see your investment but it is important to keep in mind that counting votes and checking accounts is a time-consuming task and in addition of delaying results, we are also obliged to delay some content creation.

The Shadow Council is the place for all the Heroes fans to give their opinion and influence the game content.

Best,
The M&M team.

Sylvan Townscreen - Vote 1

Dear Shadow Council members,

It has been already more than one month since the victory of the Sylvan faction and while our team is currently working on the first creatures of the line-up you selected, we’ve discussed with them an opportunity for you to have an even bigger impact on how the Sylvan faction will appear in the game.

Beginning today, a new vote is starting, different from any made in the past: you are the ones who will decide for the global atmosphere of the Sylvan Townscreen! This vote will be splitted in two:

- The first one, which begins right now, will decide for the scenery and the general setting of the townscreen. Please check below to discover the two options and more details about this vote!
- The second one, which will begin right after this one will focus on the lighting and ambiance of the Townscreen.

/!\ Townscreens are a really important feature so please keep in mind that this vote will help us to define general direction of them but we will have to comply with all gameplay elements so final results might differ from the following concepts that aren’t related to Heroes 7 in any ways.

Vote Now for the general setting!

Let’s start right away with the first decision that is in your hands: the general setting of the townscreen!

Two options:

- The Forest Sanctum: Hidden in the heart of the Forest Maze of Irollan, this Sylvan city is a majestic temple dedicated to the Earth Goddess. The temple melds with the surrounding wildlife, a true example of the harmony Elves strive to achieve.

- The Tree Island: This gigantic, millennia-old tree shelters many life forms, and the Elven city was built directly in its branches and roots, becoming part of its ecosystem. This proposal is very similar in spirit to the Heroes V Sylvan townscreen.

Thank you for your help and stay tuned in the following days for the next vote to come!

End of the vote: Sunday 09/11, 23:59 CET
